"This chapel, which is a benefice for which the vicar has obtained a license to hold as a chapel-of-ease to St. Andrew's Auckland, is of very ancient origin, though the present edifice has no features of antiquity about it. Its foundation goes back to the time of the formation of a guild in connection with the parish church, which continued up to the reign of Edward VI. " [From History, Topography and Directory of Durham, Whellan , London, 1894]
